TPS (Temporary Protected Status)
Temporary Protected Status, also known as TPS is a special program for immigrants from certain countries that allows them to stay and work in the United States for designated period of time. The Secretary of State designates countries for TPS based on temporary conditions in the country that make it not safe for its nationals to return, also, based on certain circumstances, the country can not sufficiently accept its nationals.
When designating the country for TPS, The Secretary of State considers the following conditions in the country:
Ongoing Armed Conflict such as Civil War
An Environmental Disasters such as Earthquakes or Hurricanes
An Epidemic Disasters
Other Extraordinary and Temporary Conditions.
TPS beneficiaries are allowed to temporary reside within the United States and receive work authorization. They are also not removable from the United States and can receive Travel Authorization. Currently there are 10 countries designated for TPS by Secretary of State. Those countries are:
El Salvador
Haiti
Honduras
Nepal
Nicaragua
Somalia
South Sudan
Sudan
Syria
Yemen
Every eligible person shall apply to receive their TPS status during 180-day initial registration period designated by the Department of State.
Every TPS beneficiary shall maintain their status by submitting their re-registration package during 60-day re-registration period designated by the Department of State.
Anyone who fails to register or re-register during the designated time period, they will be disqualify and/or lose their TPS status unless they have a good cause to qualify for Late Filing.
Currently there is no initial registration for nationals from any of the designated countries.
60-day Re-registration is currently open for the countries listed below with filing deadlines:
El Salvador: Re-registration is open until March 19, 2018
Haiti: Re-registration is open until March 19, 2018
Honduras: Re-Registration is open until February 13, 2018
Nicaragua: Re-Registration is open until February 13, 2018
